Purpose : This study was done to develop guidelines on the legal, ethical and philosophical grounds for organ transplant to save lives and improve quality of life.
Methods : A survey was sent out to surgeons and nursing coordinators to get the current situation of organ transplant in 66 centers. 112 responses from 53 centers were collected and analyzed using the SASprogram for descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficient. This was followed by discussions of ethical and hilosophical considerations.
Results : This study investigates the current situation of organ transplant in Korea and discusses some of the legal issues indicated in . It is suggested that organ transplant from brain death donors should be more common, but current law has hindered this. The procedure of brain death determination, the role and construction of the brain death committee, and the procedure of "informed consent" must be improved. The case of Germany and the U.S. may be good example to effect this. Human tissue transplant has its own problems but should still be considered as part of transplant.
